| Consecutive | Consecutive interpreting occurs when the interpreter orally translates the words of a speaker after he or she has stopped speaking. This type of interpretation is appropriate for speeches, presentations, and other situations in which real-time interpretation is not necessary. |
| Simultaneous | For simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter orally translates the words of the original speaker in real-time—while the speaker is still speaking. This is common, for example, at international conferences where attendees wear headphones and listen to translations in their own language. Specialized equipment is often necessary for simultaneous interpretation. |
| Whisper | Whispering interpretation is similar to simultaneous interpretation, except that the interpreter is translating orally for only one or two people and speaks quietly so only they can hear the interpretation. This is ideal, for example, if only one person at a meeting requires language interpretation. |
