About the Program

Intercultural Awareness: China includes the following six modules :

Module1: Introduction—reviews navigational tools, Knowledge Checks, and course objectives, and includes a Culture overview

Module 2: Profile of China—discusses key characteristics of China’s geography, major cities, key events in China’s political history; China’s government structure and restrictions on its citizens; national holidays and education system; China’s two main economic centers, and how to exchange foreign currency and make purchases.

Module 3: Business Climate—explains China’s centrally planned economy and transition to a market economy and the effect on workers and managers; the four company structures available to foreign businesses in China; interaction with government officials and negotiating with the Chinese.

Module 4: Conducting Business—describes appropriate verbal and nonverbal behaviors and etiquette when conducting business with the Chinese; building guanxi, preserving mianzi, and establishing renquing; and handling business cards correctly.

Module 5: Basic Language Skills—introduces fundamentals of the Chinese language, including initial greetings, simple words and phrases, titles, and numbers.

Module 6: Summary—briefly reviews the material in Modules 2 through 5.
